On the right are two notable quotes from President Wison's wartime speeches before Congress (April 2, 1917) in which he explained as to why the defeat of Imperial Germany was best for the Unites States; the other quote, excerpted from an address made three months earlier, summarized his reasoning as to why he felt a fair peace treaty was vital in maintaining the peace in Europe:
