The Race for the
Atom Bomb was On

• Coronet Magazine, 1942 •

The americans hadn't been in the war for very long when this article went to print; yet here they are - the names of some of your favorite atom smashers: Niels Bohr, Lise Meitner, Enrico Fermi and Ernest Lawrence. These are the names that would be printed all across the world in the late summer of 1945 - when the reading public craved to know something about the Atomic Bomb and this thing called "nuclear fission".

When this piece was written, the CORONET MAGAZINE readers were more apt to believe that victory would depend more on battleship production than anything else: why was CORONET writing about the importance of uranium? We have no doubt that the FBI was knocking at the publisher's door not very long after the issue appeared at the newsstands.
